Frog patrol's first night of the season last night, we moved 135 northern red-legged frogs (Rana aurora), 44 of whom were females. 55-58*F and raining. Perfection. Here are a few of the little beauties we moved:

Harborton Frog Shuttle season 2024-2025 is coming to a close. We moved over 1500 frogs to and from the wetlands this year, and are a step closer to getting that underpass constructed for them. Let's do it again in December!

After 11pm the traffic on Hwy 20 died down and the songs of all the frogs in the wetlands below came up from the valley. It was cold and wet but I was cozy & dry in my gear. The air was so clean, and every big drop of water on the lichen and moss shone like a fleeting diamond. Peace.

After 11pm the traffic on Hwy 20 died down and the songs of all the frogs in the wetlands below came up from the valley. It was cold and wet but I was cozy & dry in my gear. The air was so clean, and every big drop of water on the lichen and moss shone like a fleeting diamond. Peace.
Frog shuttle moved around 300 northern red-legged frogs (Rana aurora) last night to and from the wetlands. Majority females, many of them gravid heading to the water, many skinny again after having laid eggs, heading for the hills. Some pictures of the lovely creatures:

The giant Iranian mandrake (Mandragora turcomanica, bottom center-leftish) has decided to send up a cluster of very large flower buds! They are the size of small grapes and are already taking a purple blush. Exciting! The other two are M. autumnalis. They bloom whenever they feel like it.
