The Benoit Winery Murders. French Guiana's penal colony ran on a policy called doublage. After finishing a sentence, a prisoner had to remain in the colony for an equal number of years before going home. Prisoners called the colony itself the Dry Guillotine.

During Michael Benoit's 1912 murder trial, the judge told the courtroom the case was disturbing and a significant piece of the puzzle was missing. The judge let the conviction stand anyway.
