Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra were educated at home, along with their brothers. Jane and Cassandra also attended the Abbey Gate School, Reading, which was run by Sarah Hackett. Sarah changed her name to Mrs La Tournelle, despite being English and unmarried.

The north front of Steventon rectory. Jane Austen was born there on 16 December 1775. That winter was harsh with snowdrifts blocking roads. The bitterly cold temperatures also froze the urine in chamber pots.
