Only realised the Lobster Festival was on when I arrived in Dalkey yesterday morning. After 24 years in Dublin, and annual pilgrimages to the Dalkey Book Festival, this was my first time experiencing Dalkey during the Lobster weekend.

Rain fell upon us like a curtain of shiny beads. It was as if the earth had taken a deep sigh, its thirst finally quenched. The scents of grass, trees and flowers rose from the wet ground, enwrapping me with urgency and intensity.

The moon is nearly full, moving slowly in the sky, above the roofs and the tree branches. A woman walking ahead of me stops to take a photo. On her phone camera, the moon is big—mouth-openingly bright and round. On mine, it is only a tiny dot, easily mistaken for a street lamp.

Browsed Netflix for a good while before deciding what to binge today. It’s a quiet, sleepy day, and I’m feeling a bit tired. So The Crystal Cuckoo it is, the “small town with secrets” genre with eerie folk-horror elements. Might be just the right thing.

No matter how late I get home from a New Year’s Eve gathering with friends, I always wake up in time for the New Year’s Concert in Vienna. With my first coffee of the year in hand, I watch the camera glide across the audience and the orchestra.

On my mind today: people who move through the world with presence. Hands -on, attentive, able to look around and immediately sense what needs doing and who needs support. The ones who steady others in a crisis, bring people together. I wish I am that kind of person.
