‼️🚨New Paper Alert! 🚨‼️
Using a decades-long dataset on puffins in the Faroe Islands, we show a change in population age structure and relate the increase in older birds/decrease in cohort sizes to (pre-)hatch year food availability.

Variation in food availability affects the population age structure of Atlantic puffins Fratercula arctica in the Faroe Islands
Across their entire Atlantic breeding range, Atlantic puffins Fratercula arctica have experienced decreases in food availability, often leading to population declines. The species is one of the most ....

One of the challenges of working with European #stormpetrels on the #FaroeIslands is that they don't really synchronise anything... These two chicks were weighed 5 minutes apart! @jasonwalczak.bsky.social @trevormaclaurin.bsky.social

Opportunities and challenges for new technologies in seabird population monitoring
Abstract. Monitoring of seabird population size and demography has for decades relied on observer-based methods. While such methods have allowed the accumu

More space hardware, in the form of an orbital ring. I posted this before but that was when I had like ten followers, so what the hell.
These structures are entirely allowed by physics. We just lack the will and money, preferring to waste it instead on hate and war.

It is a #mushroom! Probably a one-off experiment, but definitely a token of appreciation for the mushroom farmer that has been providing us with delicious varieties during our time in #Halifax

I've been so busy with the bird nest monitor project that I haven't made anything copper related in a while. So, I started a mini trial/test project! Can you guess what it will be?👀

The waterproof* enclosure I ordered arrived. It is IP68 since it will be sitting on a grassy hillside under a rock year round. Battery holders are epoxied in, hole drilled for sensors and connectors!

Everything is finally dry! Total: 10 10cm dishes, 6 25cm dishes. I'm very nervous about having them fired, as I won't be able to make any more for a long while. Still, a step towards my final vision for my craft!

10 10cm dishes drying. I finished the remainder of my clay a couple of weeks ago and packed up my temporary setup. I'm excited to one day have my own equipment!
I'm also excited to fill these dishes with new tree designs in the (hopefully) near future!

Very exciting! Today was just some component discovery, trying to get these IR sensors to run on the lowest current possible. I got them down to lower than my multimeter can read, so thats good news for the battery life!

Well, that wasn't supposed to happen. I fired my first batch of plates and learned from the results. This was the worst of it, a crack, the other 2 warped. I was worried about these issues before they were fired, I made adjustments to the others I threw.
