We are a broken nation. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians were living and working legally, paying taxes, and contributing. Haiti remains wholly unsafe.

But Trump hates Haitians, and the White House wanted videos of Black people in chains, so they stripped them of status and turned on the cameras.

Last year, after President Trump eliminated my wife's and my jobs, we moved to Germany.

South Writ Large invited me to reflect on our move in their Summer 2026 issue, which came out yesterday.

Can't emphasise how much I feel these are exactly the sort of use cases and users the web was made for: "hobbyists, hackers, educators, makers and developers"! Not everything has to be about corporate bottom lines sometimes the web can just be for fun tinkering (but also lots of real world use too)!

heard a guy say "you have to access it through the portal" and i was momentarily struck by how sad it is that what he said is so boring :( "accessing it via the portal" should be wonderful. we deserve that at least. it should be cool to access it via the portal and instead it sucks shit

In April 1998, Macromedia released the Macromedia Fireworks 1.0 graphics program. The program was able to work with both vector and bitmap graphics and was designed specially for web designers.

Wow. I try to avoid compliance-related work when possible because it makes people lose their minds, but I was not expecting this.

i started this several weeks ago

tl;dr is i think coding agents might actually be a real live use case for large language models but:

a) that doesn't automatically entail a glide path to victory
b) certainly not for the vendors of chatbots-as-a-service

Slop-Machine Future
The arc of large language models is mediocre, and it bends toward “target procurement”.

The entire Democratic strategy debate — "moderate" or move left? fight or compromise? — is based on a misreading of data. Voters don't think Dems are too progressive; they think Dems are weak. The actual math on what to do about this isn't even close!

If you're a developer surrounded by people debating the utility of LLMs, you are being misled.

The advent of agents decisively settles the conversation. The real question is: how do you ship software that leverages their power?

I spent 2025 answering this question
