This sounds parallel to our department's current efforts to overhaul our major requirements. Some students want that traditional set of coursework, but others want to do linguistics differently, and apply it to different fields, and I think we need to enable that, rather than discourage it.

Last year they completely knocked me out, and then I just got mine again two days ago and barely felt anything. Seems to be a total crapshoot. Same logic though, I refuse to get them on a Friday.

My first visit to Korea was summer 2001, and I arrived home on September 10. I have a photo my parents took of me at the gate after I deplaned, and I realized that photo really represents the end of an era, because the very next day it became impossible for non-passengers to go past security at all.

This makes me feel better about my gameless 3 years (and is also somewhat enabling 🤔).

The serendipity of “the next book over” in libraries and used book stores is a wonderful and often overlooked method of randomly learning new and fascinating things.

I have used an Oster 2097654 for three years. It's nothing special but I have no complaints, either!

Most reliably, the finale to Act 2 of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet (on many recordings it's the second half of "Death of Tybalt"). I find it one of the most intense two minutes of music ever written. Chills every time, especially the last few bars.

To me it just reads like a passive: site (is) closed at 10pm. So there's someone that does the closing, which yeah I guess does sound more commanding somehow, rather than the (non-sentient and therefore non-threatening) site just closing itself.

This is a very interesting comparison. In my intro class I spend a day teaching about the ape language learning studies, and their various flaws, but hadn't thought about this parallel before.
