I'm immensely indebted to the people in my life who have made this journey spectacular. I have no idea how I got so lucky, but I'm so glad I did. Also despite the pic in the first post my thesis has nothing to do with E=mc2. /end

I'm so grateful as well to the Seattle theater and dance communities, in which I spent a lot of my free time and got lots of inspiration when things were less than ideal in lab 8/

My committee was always supportive and stayed focused on the big picture. It's easy to get lost in the weeds but @suebiggins.bsky.social @dougfowler.bsky.social and Justin Kollman tactfully made sure I avoided that. They're crazy busy but always made time when I needed it, and I'm so grateful 7/

I was well rewarded by the scientists I mentored during my time here. Chelsea, Anthony and Kevin all certainly taught me so much more than I taught them, and they've all gone on to do great things. Proud parent moment! 6/

Of course I also enjoyed the work I got to do. You can read a little about integrin innovation here: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... and histone chaperone preservation here: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... and a secret third integrin thing we hope to have out shortly! 5/
Molecular exaptation by the integrin αI domain
An ancient protein domain insertion seamlessly preserved conformational signaling while providing a novel surface for adaptation.

@fredhutch.org @basicsci.fredhutch.org and @mcbseattle.bsky.social make it scary easy to do science. It's not lost on me how much of our time as scientists we spend not doing science, but these administrations minimize that burden and really give students license to dream big. 4/

I didn't realize at the time what a good choice it was to join a new lab, but seeing the Campbell lab grow from (nearly) the beginning was not only fun and a little chaotic, but wildly humbling. It's a lab full of motivated superstars and I'm just happy to be a part of it 3/

I have been mentored by two of the best scientists I've ever known. @melodygcampbell.bsky.social and @harmitmalik.bsky.social are truly a dream team and ALWAYS go above and beyond to support their trainees. Lots of freedom, big safety net, put people before work without exception 2/
