It was still a foolish mistake: it directly dragged the USA into the war in Europe, rather than sitting it out on the sidelines selling munitions to the UK. In today's terms it'd be like Putin declaring war on the USA over the US's support for Ukraine.

I donate monthly to Ukraine causes. I fly the 🇺🇦 flag outside my house. Many more from the USA should support Ukraine and the EU. But RU has run a highly successful PsyOp for many years and we got trump and his cult.
