Nuclear physicist, bay area resident, veteran. PhD UC Berkeley. Opinions my own, unless they're bad. No, even then I suppose.
on one hand I can reduce my data, on the OTHER hand maybe I can train a fruit fly brain to reduce my data 🧪

To look for element 120 we're building a Californium target, which is way too hot to handle. Check out how Rohan is using a robot to assemble our radioactive pizza here. 🍕🧪
Mission briefing! 🚨 We're building a super radioactive target to make the new element E120, and we need a hero! Introducing DRAGONS, the robot Rohan is training for the job. Watch the discovery unfold! 💪💥🧪

Little Red Dots (LRDs) are my favorite "silly little phrase that became a Science Term ™️" since the Big Bang
A new paper that I'm excited to be a part of: Little Red Dots (LRDs) at high redshift have very specific chemical signatures of high-temperature hydrogen burning generally only seen in nearby globular clusters (GCs). This may indicate GCs and LRDs are connected and both hosted supermassive stars! 🧪

One of the things I love about working at @berkeleylab.lbl.gov is that if I'm ever feeling young and spry I can walk to work through campus and then I feel accurately old and tired

"Physicists don't understand" means they just don't know how to make it a harmonic oscillator yet 🧪

A particle made of force?

Chinese researchers claim they've definitively detected a "glueball"--a particle of bound gluons, which carry the strong force. Gluons bind together protons & neutrons, but they can also stick to each other. No ordinary matter required. 🧪

Oh ok nevermind I get it. 🧪

I'm convinced GRETA is the most satisfying arrangement of germanium detectors humanity has created. It was very not-satisfying to help run the cables for them though. 🧪
The Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETA) has successfully completed its commissioning run at FRIB! 🔬 Led by Berkeley Lab, the world's most advanced gamma-ray spectrometer is ready to reveal the inner workings of atomic nuclei.

The lab decided "PEP" is the best term for our yearly goal setting because I guess they don't have the trauma of being in the startup/tech sector.

When scientists identify that a published paper may be wrong, that is science succeeding not failing. Peer review is helpful but imperfect.

Can the 88-Inch Cyclotron Save the Periodic Table? – Nuclear Science Division
The modern periodic table creates the illusion that chemistry is a solved puzzle. With every row and column of the table filled — either by atoms studied for centuries or man-made ones observed only…
