You are not alone. I once took my daughter and her friend to a Phillip Pullman talk and booksigning when "The Amber Spyglass" was new. The friend had a loved-to-death copy of the Golden Compass; line managers asked if she would go last. Mr. Pullman wrote her a whole paragraph dedication.
