Ditto. I first saw it when I met up with my Uncle Alex in London (he had moved down there from a mining town in Scotland as a young man). We went to the National Gallery and he asked me if I could pick out his favourite painting in the collection and when I saw this I knew this was it. It’s amazing

I think you’d enjoy the BBC Scotland’s ’Meet Me At The Hippos’. Mark Bonnar’s documentary about the town artists for the Scottish new towns of 60s and 70s, one of whom was his dad, Stan Bonnar. ‘On iPlayer now’, as they say

What a wonderful piece of writing. I especially love the view that a lot of those one hit bands, who are viewed as coat-tail grabbers in movements like grunge, are peopled by guys who just wanted to create their way out of deadbeat towns or terrible lives. And fair play to them.

I think ‘My Favourite Thing Is Monsters’ is an incredible work of art. Unique (at least until the sequel came out), beautiful, funny and sad. Spend as long as you can on every page.
