HR82. On Investing. The five big questions: 1. Do you love the assets?, 2. Is the business well-managed?, 3. Is it resilient?, 4. Why now?, 5. Is the stock reasonably priced?

To understand risk, you need to understand resilience. You cannot accurately judge the risks involved without considering the factors that make those risks less impactful.
The idea of stealing pens is something everyone can relate to. Brilliant marketing image.

Argentina is playing quite dirty here. I might have to start calling them Paraguay. Going back to the last World Cup, some of these players are pretty nasty. On field and off.

Yet another poorly officiated game. It was good entertainment, but I’m not sure I would think so if I was a partisan fan.

It won’t be too long before Wembanyama is a billionaire.

Good news - bad news.

The good news: England moves to the next round.

Bad news: Quansah who? will miss the next game with a red card, that is unless Charles has more pull with Infantino than anyone suspects.

I’m waiting for Trump to tell Infantino to fix it.

Alexi Lalas is emblematic of all that’s wrong with America today. He’s out of his depth, but he keeps projecting his ignorance to the world without shame, hoping we will all take him seriously. And for some reason, despite his broad unpopularity, corporate America still supports him. Sound familiar?

In NYC, everyone is a Knicks fan today, Nets fan or not, sports fan or not. New York is always under constant boos from everyone else in the country, for all sorts of reasons, all the time. Today, the most populous region of the nation shows a bold middle finger.

I think it’s pretty clear that drones have changed military strategy in a big way. Asymmetric warfare is a bitch when you are on the side that has spent hundreds of $billions to make a point.

Ellison can certainly try to create another Fox News or Newsmax, but you have to ask yourself, what’s the point. He and Bari will have to tear CBS News down and rebuild it from scratch, costing $bs. Oh, and network TV is in secular decline. I think he’s risking the relevance of the entire network.

As an investor, I usually am buying two things: either 1) investment optionality (management teams making capex bets, usually multiple bets) on the future or 2) companies with pricing power (cash printing machines with an attractive combination of free cash yield and free cash growth.)

@conorsen.bsky.social the younger generations are the canary in the coal mine. Not making predictions (because accurate predictions are impossible), but employment statistics always deserve the closest analysis and greatest attention.

The art of politics at its most fundamental is the art of creating and using leverage. Politics is not about honesty. Honesty is usually antithetical to the use of leverage.
