Eventually, you will have something resembling the world we actually live in. Only then can you ask why reality has the shape it does. The answer does not change because someone would prefer to lie about the obvious impacts of lost capacity — especially when it comes to oil.

Ukrainians should therefore demand more from him, not because outsiders know Fedorov better than they do, but because the stakes justify forcing every serious contender for power to expose his reasoning. What problem, precisely, is he solving? Why is an election the best available solution? Why now? What would Russia do with the opportunity? What would make Fedorov admit he was wrong? What can Ukraine do if elections remain impossible? And does his proposed architecture still look equally good if somebody other than Mykhailo Fedorov wins? Those are not arguments against Fedorov. They are the questions a potentially important Ukrainian political leader should be able to answer. Then Ukrainians — with their clarity of proximity — can decide what the answers tell them. And for me and Vexler, I have to say, our pony yet remains Ukraine and her people.

The question is not simply whether Jeffries supports Medicare for All. The question is whether the Democratic Party is still functioning in the direction democracy says it should: from voters, through representatives, into policy. Or whether the machinery has begun running backward, with voters supplying the energy while the institution decides how much of their demand can safely survive. That is the game. Three pieces move the board. Kyle and I already have two. Carville may defect away from us. Kristol has defected toward us but carries a profound historical debt. Jeffries possesses the power, represents the coalition, and should have been our third piece from the beginning. Which is why, once we understand the board, Kyle Kulinski’s fury at Leader Jeffries is not difficult to understand in the least.

So if Putin sees an American president who can weaken the coalition sustaining Ukraine, game theory tells us what Putin should do. Exploit the opportunity. Our job is equally obvious. Make sure the opportunity does not become decisive. That is what the little 2-by-2 matrix gives us. It turns an argument about motives into a problem about choices. It lets us operate before we can know everything. And it leaves Broe with a much better question for Vexler: If Putin is “playing against” the worst plausible President Trump for us, what are Putin’s winning strategies — and what countermove keeps us out of the losing square?

Perhaps I have therefore been looking at Galeotti incorrectly. I still do not particularly care what Mark Galeotti thinks. But I am beginning to care quite a lot about what happens to Vlad Vexler after Mark Galeotti says it. The more Vexler dismantles Galeotti, the better Vexler becomes. And that may be the real story here.

The correct European strategy is therefore not to wait for Russia to collapse. It is to make Russian collapse irrelevant to the outcome of the war. Ukraine must receive enough resources to defeat Russia’s strategy before Russia’s strategy defeats Ukraine. Europe should recognize Russian economic cannibalization for what it actually tells us. Putin is burning Russia’s future to purchase military power in the present. Maybe eventually there will be nothing left to burn, but Europe cannot afford to wait and find out. Why? Because Russia can still win — Ukraine can still lose. And if Putin learns that destroying Russia was enough to conquer Ukraine, Europe should not assume that the lesson he draws will be to stop. It should assume he will conclude that the price of war is worth paying.

And AOC, whether she arrived at all of this through political science, practical experience or some combination of the two, seems to have assembled many of those insights into a working political strategy. I started watching an interview. What I found sounded surprisingly like a theory of government. And, when I went looking, political science had already written a substantial portion of the bibliography.

Someone must see the whole war. That responsibility belongs first to President Trump as chief executive and commander in chief. It extends through the secretary of defense or war, the four-star leadership, intelligence chiefs, diplomatic officials, economic policymakers, and every senior officer whose position exists to connect military activity to national purpose. The United States possessed more than enough power to devastate Iran. What it lacked was a command system capable of using that power to leave Iran without a viable alternative to American victory. That is why the war failed. And, sadly, given Trump and Hegseth, none of it should have been surprising.
