There's a small but powerful and successful space in public health medicine. All of the COVID-era SAGE modelling group, and a generation of UK/US vaccine program designers, trained around an epidemiology group that explicitly self-identified as ecologists.

Even less frivolously, most of these other suggestions, though marvellous to us, would have been just toys for rulers. But in 1525 a hand grinder for turning smallpox scabs into vaccine would have had quite impressive effects on the fate of the Aztecs.

An actual time machine would be hard to beat for making an impression. (Plus you can go back and stop the parents meeting of whoever who want to burn you.) Slightly less frivolously, take a 300 year old chronometer, solve the longitude problem and impress by the size of your trade routes.

I think Evelyn Fox Keller's _Making Sense of Life_ is superb anf thought-provoking not just on Leduc but the whole program of theoretical and synthetic biology. Lots of 'yes!' moments. I don't know why it isn't better known, though I have known people mistake it for a self-help book...

An uncropped unlabelled image is at conexion.cinvestav.mx/multimedia/G... . It looks as though it comes from the Cinvestav archives so I would guess UNAM. Really doubt this is Macy (and Mead is not one normally to be found in the back row...)
