In 1907, the James B. Congdon School opened its doors to children in the South End. Today was its last opening day, as the new Congdon-DeValles School will open in January. The kids today I suspect were no less excited to begin school than their counterparts 119 years ago.

We’re excited to unveil New Bedford’s long anticipated Herman Melville statue this Friday with a program featuring the distinguished Melville scholar Robert Wallace, internationally acclaimed sculptor Stefanie Rothnak, and one of the greatest American actors of our era, Sam Waterston.

Thanks to a donation from @FIFAcom and @usmayors, we gave out over 100 soccer balls to boys and girls at the Gomes School. It left no doubt about soccer’s growing popularity in New Bedford.

Herman is here! The newly forged statue of Herman Melville is now being installed next to the Seaman’s Bethel — the “ Whaleman’s Chapel” in Melville’s Moby Dick. It will be unveiled in a public ceremony on August 14.

The New Bedford Film Festival kicks off tonight at the Steeple House Theater, and runs for the next three nights at various downtown locations. It’s getting bigger and better every year.

Today we cut the ribbon at the Flats at 8th, a fabulous, 52-unit apartment building downtown. More housing units will put downward pressure on rents. Many thanks to Duane Jackson who had the vision to turn an old bank into housing, and for the persistence to see it through.

At the height of yesterday’s storm, our crews focused on main streets because it was essential to keep them open. The work from here is to dig out the side streets. We’ll have city crews and contractors at work around the clock, like this front end loader on Belleville Rd in the North End.

The second graders at the Abraham Lincoln Elementary School today gave me a master class in “What Mayors Do,” just as the sign says. I soaked it all up. Many thanks to them and their teachers on a delightful visit.
