Counting Down to a Debut There’s a strange kind of quiet that settles in during the final weeks before a debut novel comes out. Writing a debut is like being handed a puzzle with half the pieces missing and being told, confidently, that you’ll find the rest along the way. And somehow, you do.

How in the hell did I get here?

I wrote my first murder mystery at 13, for an English class — failed it over grammar, not story, and didn't talk about writing again for almost thirty years. One big fat F at 13 can quiet a person for a long, long time — turns out. (1/3)
