Some late night thoughts from yesterday on NVIDIA DSLL5, after watching the official demonstration, listening to Digital Foundry's take on this new tech, and getting upset about it. As an artist and game dev, this is very concerning, and I am glad a lot of you are, like me "completely wrong", too. 🙏
Masks and sliders are mentioned, full control for the developer is promised, but in the end, an unacceptable technology will still serve as the basis, and you'll simply be able to adjust how much visual distortion you want to see. Ultimately, the user, not the developer, will have control. This completely undermines the true value of experiencing video games as an interactive art form with a goal, a message, intentionally and deliberately presented visually as it should be experienced out of the box. The user will impose a completely different visual interpretation on the game.. This reinterpretation, however, is itself only hampered by the constraints of a deliberately shaped filter, controlled by intentionally created databases fed through unethical and morally reprehensible data theft, and by a vast number of misogynistic and sexualized images. This new look distorts the experience the developer actually intended, thus preventing the user from understanding the developer's true message. It's a shallow, cheap, and dazzling facade that has nothing to do with what the developer ostensibly wanted to convey, but instead serves as a political tool, a Trojan horse, for the indoctrination of a particular ideology and for desensitizing players to a dangerous political movement.
