Cannot BEGIN to tell you how much this feels like resurrecting a part of me I had feared lost. My world has been a train-wreck and writing has always been the lifeline I cling to in the madcap world that is my daily life.

This one is on world building and how I believe it should be done.
Really giving away the game lately.

They don't want you to retire. They don't believe disabilities are legitimate. Fuck Vivek and his dumb bullshit.
🚨NEWS: Vivek Ramaswamy states he would vote to "significantly constrain and attach work requirements to most of the welfare state," explicitly highlighting Social Security and Medicaid.

This describes basically every major ugly movement in Kansas, from Westboro to whatever the current GOP is.

Kids grew up and did what they wanted and the law expanded to protect them and it made them lose their damn minds.
Not to get too gender about it but this is a major driver behind most reactionary mindsets because ultimately it is about the ability to control your wife and children
It’s underrated how many of the cardinal achievements of modernity are things that allow for you to interact with people you don’t personally trust.

“Contracts are enforceable” and “my safety doesn’t depend on someone being willing to avenge me” really changes the ways you can live.

the worst part about this is that a lot of the damage will be permanent

by the time we can turn the research funding back on a lot of folks will have unsurprisingly and not unreasonably decided that they should leave this area of research because it will never be reliable

what a huge waste
NSF has reduced the research budget for all atmospheric, ocean, and earth sciences by ~80%.

80%!

A lot of us will not be conducting new research or training new students for the foreseeable future.

This is very much how the current GOP wants elections to be handled.

They aren't going to for a lot of reasons, but this is what they are trying to replicate.
The electoral farce in occupied Ukraine is so absurdly sinister it reads like evil satire

i think the only change in my opinions re: AI safety since this post is that i'm now mildly concerned with rogue intelligence—not as an existential threat but as a "oops i forgot to tell Claude make no mistakes and accidentally bricked the NYSE" problem

I wanted to write tonight but I am still suffering severe after-effects of adrenal overdose.

When I say we are living on the edge right now, I mean that we are one more disaster away from falling off a cliff and I was chucked out into the open air tonight and just barely clung to solvency.

The dumbest asshole in the country and the President need to be two different people moving forward
Trump: "If we lose $50 billion a year with a country, and we say 'we're not going to trade with you anymore,' we don't lose $50 billion a year. It's very simple. Right?"

Hey everyone.

Didn't post today because of shift change and a million errands.

I am cautiously optimistic about moving to nights. So far it has created a lot of opportunities as well as some unexpected challenges.

We got this. You got this. All my love, be good.

a lot of people think that faillison hired bari weiss to deliberately destroy CBS news and i think all of you need to consider the possibility that he hired her because he genuinely thought she would be successful.
a wild thing is that they didn’t just give her editorial control, they gave her what sounds like operational control (over hiring/firing), which would be objectively an insane thing to do even if she was good at editorial, which she isn’t, or had experience at an org this size, which she doesn’t
Once again for the people in the back. Bari does not have any talent. She can throw a good party and chat you up but good, and people mistake that for ability. It was fine enough to open her empty vessel of a newsletter. It can't run a real organization.

with all the bad news for trans rights recently I think it’s important to highlight some good news

good for governor spanberger
Governor Abigail Spanberger quietly ended a rulemaking process initiated in the waning days of former-governor Glenn Youngkin’s administration. The rule would have limited transgender students' ability to play sports and use facilities.

Spanberger quietly kills Youngkin-era transgender rulemaking effort
“There’s no legal authority to move forward with rulemaking and prior administrations may have tried to create lanes and we’re not doing that,” Gov. Abigail Spanberger said.

ALERT: #GreatLakes and #Rockies regions are likely to see another price hike this week, even with price jumps that happened already yesterday and today due to huge jumps in wholesale gasoline and diesel prices. Gasoline could jump 25-75c with diesel rising 55-85c/gal

we've reached a new milestone- the U.S. average diesel price has hit $6.301/gal while gasoline is up to $4.355/gal. I expect both of these to jump noticably over the next 48 hours. diesel could hit $6.60/gal in a few days, surpassing the inflation-adjusted peak seen in 2022.

Hey everyone.

Starting to have more consistent side effects from the shots. I'm on 24 hours with no food and it's looking like I'll have to go another 12-24 as well.

Hope this does not become a trend. Sincerely hope I am not back in the hospital like I was at the start of the year.

All my love.

the reason my likely presidential candidate tier list has two people at the top - Ossoff and AOC - is that they are by far the most effective messengers of I Am Fucking Furious And There Must Be Consequences, which is the most deeply held conviction of the Dem base
Ossoff: "We are witnessing people drunk with power who are utterly reckless, utterly corrupt, and obviously believe that they live with impunity. They believe they're untouchable. They believe they're invincible. Let's prove them wrong."
