We assemble a new dataset of 25,000+ ethnoreligious organizations across 54 immigrant groups and ~5,000 local communities in Germany. We combine data from a wide range of sources in multilevel framework to predict the scale of immigrant communities’ local organizational networks.

Why do some minority groups organize around their ethnicity, while others do not? In a new study just out in AJS @amjsoc.bsky.social (w/@mschaeffer.bsky.social, S. Carol and S. Böller), we crunched data on over 25000 immigrant organizations for an answer.

Brilliant article just out in PLOSOne: The overlap of gender and ethnicity/SES in school classes has large effects on friendship segregation.
The authors develop an easy fix:
Class placement minimizing gender consolidation decreases segregation by 4–7 percentage points.

Call for Papers:

My department @wzb.bsky.social is organizing a conference on the application of Cultural Evolution Theory to migration/diversity topics.

I find this very exciting.

Consider applying and share widely!

Why did I visit the Facebook pages of 5500 German grocery stores on a grey lockdown day ca. 2021?

You can now find out in AJS.

Thanks for the shout-out! Yes, if you focus on mismatch, there is no trend towards overeducation in Germany's stratified education system.

Place matters. *Regionale* Faktoren können die höhere Kriminalität Zugewanderter fast vollständig erklären. Der Rest ist Demografie.
