“Frontier” is a word that, like “wilderness,” I’ve come to dislike. It implies these lands weren’t populated until the first white people showed up. It’s an old trope that made its way across the continent and up to Alaska, where wannabe politicians cosplay as pioneering types.

Alaska politicians sport beards and bear-hunting bona fides to claim authenticity. But those tropes originated Outside.
