12. Sentence Endings, Character Voice, and the Flow of Dialogue
Hello again. First, a short update on JCVS. Development hit a major obstacle and stalled for a while. At one point, I felt I was about 80% of the way there. But as I tried to handle the complexities o...

I imagine a dependable character telling a commander 「了解しました」 (“Understood”), then a younger sibling 「うん、わかった」 (“Okay, got it”). To my Japanese ear, the change can reveal another side of the same person.
October 21, 2026 at 10:26 AM
I imagine two characters walking home. 「寒い。」 and 「寒いね。」 can both be “It’s cold.” To my Japanese ear, adding ね can make the line feel like a small invitation to share that moment together.
October 17, 2026 at 10:23 AM
“Are you coming too?” I imagine one friend asking another 「一緒に来る?」 (Coming along?). There’s no あなた (“you”) or name in the Japanese line. To my ear, that can feel perfectly natural when the scene makes it clear who is being asked.

I’m building JCVS for indie VN/RPG creators who don’t read Japanese. My goal is to help bring their written dialogue into Japanese while keeping each character’s personality and way of speaking.

Prototype in development.

I imagine a character who always calls a friend お前 (omae, “you”), then suddenly uses their name. To my Japanese ear, that can feel unusually serious—or quietly affectionate, depending on the scene. The change catches my attention because it breaks their usual pattern.

お前 (omae) can sound close or hostile to me. An old friend and a stranger saying it bring very different scenes to mind.

Sometimes, a character’s choice of “I” is enough for me to start picturing the person speaking. JCVS has hit a tricky patch, so development is moving a little slowly at the moment. In the meanti...

In the meantime, here are a native Japanese speaker’s personal impressions of different forms of “I” in fictional dialogue. 1/4

I’ve concluded that my current approach can’t deliver the quality I want for JCVS.

I’m making a major change to its development approach, so it may take much longer to finish than I’d hoped.

I’ll make sure the result is a better tool. Thank you for your patience.

Sometimes the best edit is no edit at all.

JCVS shouldn’t rewrite every line. If a line works, it should leave it alone. And when it suggests a change, it should explain why.
