I love doing these. I’ve won some really good prizes in the past too. #TheCureforDrowning was so good and it gave me a lot of overlaps. #virl #notjustforkids #adultsummerreadingchallenge

What if we treated books like TV series and stopped partway in order to read a different book? Like I read season 1 of #AmyTaylor ‘s “Ruins,“ (48 pages), jumped to O’Farrell’s “Land“ to complete a #Goodreads challenge, and now I’m picking up Ruins again at page 49. Starting season 2

An older guy on a bike outside the hospital today told me I look like a #bushwhacker. I stared & then said ya yr right, I’m a bushwhacker. I was thinking search & rescue, hiking, etc. I had a plaid shirt & Birks on. Did he mean . . . #lesbian?? Even if he didn’t, is this not the best new term?

I took the hearts feature way too literally back in 2012 when I started using #Letterboxd. Do I like that movie? Yup. Heart. Now that there’s a filter based on liked films, I have to delete a bunch & only heart my favs. There’s something in this daunting task that my AuDHD self is looking forward to

The very important Haida value of Ahl Kyaanang Tlaagang, ”Ask First.” Ask first before landing on someone’s beach, before using someone’s intangible property, before conducting research, before attending an event. So much of Haida culture is shared so generously. We non-Haida must respect boundaries

Who else plays the #NYT daily puzzles? #Connections is my favourite of the #Mini crossword, #Wordle, and Connections trio I play. I like competing w/friends too. I just hate losing my streak when I have no cell service, like the last 4 days in Gwaii Haanas. But GH is worth it ofc

I’m reading Toya Wolfe’s “Last Summer on State Street” and realized early on that [SPOILER] Fe Fe isn’t looking back one year later. Not last summer, but last as in “very last.” So her building must meet the fate of the other buildings in the neighbourhood. This makes me so sad. #toyawolfe

The Haida Gwaii Museum + the Haida Repatriation Committee work hard to build relationships with institutions and households around the world; within this pursuit, we also work hard to locate, research and repatriate our Ancestors and Belongings. 1/

In no particular order: Town, New Town, Gaw Tlagee, Village of Masset, the village, uptown, Masset, Massett with 2 T’s, the north end. Living (uninvited & grateful) on Haida Gwaii (in Haida Gwaii?). After almost 2 years, there are so many terms and distinctions I don’t understand yet. I’m learning

I’m such an impatient driver but I always want to be respectful going through Gaw Tlagee to get to & from work. I just hit cruise at 45 kms and watch the water and hauled-out boats on one side, poles on the other, so beautiful and relaxing #massett #haidagwaii

Trying to complete #VIRL ‘s *and* Goodreads’ summer reading challenges. 6 more books by Aug 31st will do it, w/overlapping categories. That’s doable, just, but 4 are on order from the library and one needs to come from the #Makah Cultural & Research Center Museum. Probably finish #Goodreads only

Archaeological observations part 2, #Alone season 1: Sam looks to have some sort of fish trap feature in front of his camp. You can see it uncovered at low tide in aerial view when they fly over, a circular feature with a narrow entrance

Archaeological observations, #Alone season 1: Lucas is camped on a midden; the white shell beach out front reflects this too. [Spoiler] He eventually figures it out and finds clams nearby. One of the logs he uses for his shelter is a CMT (culturally-modified tree) 😢

Signs we’re on Haida Gwaii (#1): Fish skin blown into the parking lot after a big distribution

Snacks taste even better when you’re watching the survival show #Alone, in a sick kind of way. It’s like, go ahead with your boiled slug stew, Alan from Georgia. I’m gonna extra enjoy this peanut butter & marmalade sandwich now

The sounds of Masset in town on a weekday summer afternoon: wind, bees, doves, chickens, kids calling, ravens’ wings cutting across the sky

I woke up to eagles calling outside my open window today. Walked into my office building to the smell of burning sage. Walked barefoot on North Beach and picked huckleberries at lunch. Came home to racks of fish, just pulled from the smoker. Life on #HaidaGwaii.

Mid-August snapshot: Huckleberries & thimbleberries are out, red elderberries, fireweed, last of the salmonberries. The air smells of alder and honeysuckle. Fish processing is in full swing, jarring & smoking. 13 and overcast this morning but shorts & t-shirts by the afternoon. #haidagwaii #northend

www.cbc.ca/news/indigen... Private companies Go International and Jenza exploiting Canadian Indigenous youth and using Maori culture for profit without proper permission or community guidance. There are great cultural exchange programs for Indigenous youth and this isn’t one of them.
Participants in Indigenous cultural exchange program to New Zealand feel 'scammed' | CBC News
What many thought was a dream opportunity for Indigenous youth from Canada to participate in cultural exchange with local Māori communities in New Zealand turned into what one participant describes as a "nightmare."

Every faucet at this campground has a big heavy rock on it. There’s a good reason for it — who can guess?

The #VIRL library system includes #HaidaGwaii along with Vancouver Island. I always felt bad on VI ordering books that were in Haida Gwaii, taking them away. But now I know that some get a Haida Gwaii Reads sticker that keeps them in circulation up here for a while! Awesome. Also, great book 👍🏼

We rely so much on this little wood stove fan. If it’s spinning, the fire’s going! The wood stove is our only source of heat

Morning, rural living, part 2: Put the gumboots back on. No need for a headlamp now. 32 steps to the outhouse. Found a little frog friend there today
October 6, 2024 at 4:02 PM
Morning, rural living: Check the woodstove, our heat source. It’s down to ash and coals. Gumboots and headlamp on, go pee outside. Fill the wheelbarrow with a load of wood at the shed. Chop kindling with the hatchet. Resurrect the fire. And now, coffee
