Have just had to send one of my retired priests this message: Bob, Odin needs to confess something to you. He thought your Grove booklet looked so tempting that he should see what the cover tasted like - thankfully I caught him before he got to the inside!!!

Have spent the last couple of weeks feeling I’m preaching what I should be for my parishes and also feeling I have got it completely wrong (new priest with a different theology of many things) but it seems much of what I’ve said has landed.

It’s well dressing week coming up (petaling is going on in my garage and the church centre) and much though I want to embrace the ministry of distractions I haven’t finished my talks and prayers for the blessing services nor even started my sermon for Sunday morning.

So you may remember that I was convinced my housesitter hated me because I had a milk incident in the fridge and she wanted to call me. Turns out she wanted to chat about what she’d been up to and stay in touch. Possibly a touch more evidence for my ND column!

Messaged my very lovely house sitter to apologise for stinky fridge (thought I’d chucked the milk in the jug, turns out I hadn’t) to which she responds can I call you on Wednesday and now I’m convinced she hates me

The only positive of recovering from a stomach bug plus a busy Sunday (don’t worry, I was clear by service times!) is that I have had no guilt in watching tennis all afternoon and evening.

Dear Media.

Vatican II wasn’t just about praying or not in Latin.

*Vatican II decided to be less antisemitic. By a lot. *

And now Pope Leo (like Francis) is reading the Bible HARD, all that “love immigrants” & “care for others” “🖕 Empire” stuff?!

This story is not complicated.

I have put on my fluffy fake Oodie, am under the blankets and lit the wood burner. What’s happened to summer?

🧵Spotted at a Country Market in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A small human (6?) is telling a friend in VERY grave tones: "My Dad isn't good at LEGO. I am. But he's not."
His friend (8?) says earnestly: "But you can teach him! He'll learn if you show him how!" (1)

Feels so weird that I am an Iranologist and that Iran as a country might no longer exist. I know the culture goes way beyond the nation-state, & that I work on the pre-modern period, but it still is a bit odd to be a specialist of a land that everyone seems to hate & gleefully watch being destroyed…

#TinyJoys when Odin Dog arrived with me 20 months ago he wouldn’t go through puddles or mud. In the last few days he has galloped through puddles with gay abandon. He is a joy in himself.

I went to #WNOTosca last night. A stunning staging and performance. (The staging was #OperaNorth and very clever.) And yet again I saw orchestra and singers in a perfect synergy. Live performances need live orchestras.

This is such an important article getting to the heart of the real issue with the Salt Path story. "The way we talk about illness and disability dictates what is possible...There are two options that seem to be available: triumphal recovery or inspirational death" lithub.com/nature-is-no...
Nature is Not Going to Cure You: On Raynor Winn’s Fabricated Memoir
Like many writers, I have been following the unfolding revelations about Raynor Winn and The Salt Path with great interest, and a degree of self-interest. I am a memoirist and nature writer, and I …

It’s a while since I’ve made this error: coffee after lunchtime means my brain is wide awake and running at speed while my body just wants to sleep.

Greenbelt packing is underway (choir tour first, then seeing a friend, then Greenbelt, then seeing other friends!). I seem to have panic bought gas stove cylinders at some point - I have far more than needed!

What a brilliant Test series. If only we had held onto the catches we dropped on Friday… though I like the symmetry of India dropping lots at Headingley and losing and us doing that at the Oval. Thanks to the #TMS team for keeping us all company for the series. Onwards to the Ashes!
