Hi! I’m Kristen, a Michigan-based illustrator (editorial + picture book) and civic design researcher just trying to do work that inspires people to dream, hope, and imagine a better, kinder world.

This was not on my 2026 bingo card.
The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:

Once again, #swordtember is upon us! This sword-themed creative challenge takes place across September and is intended to be very casual. Join in as little or much as you'd like!

I personally am too busy to participate this year but I've made a prompt list for the month.

AI billionaire-funded Super PACs will spend millions in the home stretch of the midterms to crush the anti-data center revolt in battleground states.

And that's just a drop in the bucket compared to how much these oligarchs would rake in from the AI takeover.

This needs way more attention. The U.S. Postal Service has built a new system that could effectively turn USPS into a gatekeeper for mail-in ballots. Here are the details on how it is supposed to work.

It’s been a joy illustrating covers for the Race to the Truth series so I’m excited to share that two more books are on the way. 🙂

Boarding Schools and the Indigenous Story and Displacement and the Palestinian American Story hit shelves in Aug and Sep.

I just want high-speed rail. 😔
The US is now spending more on construction for data centers than public transportation infrastructure.

Data centers contribute to higher electricity costs and air pollution —all while enriching a handful of Big Tech CEOs.

Is it any wonder communities are organizing to stop them?

I do a lot of historical research and often I find a political cartoons from one hundred years ago that explain political corruption better than contemporaries’ essays.

If you are like us, you’re going to be watching the last episode of The Late Show with sadness. But, I love that Colbert IS unabashed in his nerdom and is never afraid to speak out against things he sees as wrong.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do next, Stephen.

We are being reminded that a fundamental issue of our day isn’t simply the size of the government — it’s who our government actually works for.

Kudos to Mayor Mamdani for reminding us that government can (and should) work for the people.
When we took office, NYC had a $12B deficit. Today it’s zero.

And we didn’t close that gap on the backs of working people. We closed it while funding parks, libraries, safer streets, & public housing.

Call it Pothole Politics or Democratic Socialism: We are government that delivers for the people.

I hear people say they are exhausted and long for boring politicians and politics when no—we don’t need to Make Politics Boring Again. We need more kindness and whimsy running government. We need more of this.
Today, President Barack Obama and I read to a group of toddlers at Learning Through Play Pre-K Center in the South Bronx.

In between singing wheels on the bus, we discussed our administration’s vision for this City — one where New York’s Cutest have the strongest start possible.

I'm reminded of these wise words from Mr. Fred Rogers on what would have been his 98th birthday. We are all in this together. Let's renew ourselves to the fight for the common good. It's all the more important during these difficult times.
