This summer has been a lot and left little time for the normal summer things. Here is letter from my studio to you about rollling those unmet expectations right on in to fall + playing the cello. Again. Read it/listen to the newest letter on kristinmroach.substack.com.

My other favorite things at the Amana Handworks convention. More weaving! I love the idea of weaving a boat from willow or using hickory bark for the chair seat. Amazing! #handworks2026

Went to handwork convention in amana, Iowa today. My favorite part? The wool mill! They were giving tours and showed us all around the industrial dobby looms that have been in operation since the 80’s. They seemed so much smaller than the last time I was here (I was ~8yo, 🤣).

More Daisy! It’s her adoption anniversary and it’s been a joy! #poundpuppy

Meet Daisy: a husky/Doberman mix from El Paso Texas, was hit by a car, and was rescued by safe paws iowa from a kill shelter. She is a sweet smarty pants & 85lbs. Draw back? Truly a husky triple threat fur bomb.

This week she had a full blow out. Now she can finally join me in the studio 🥰

Painting every time: what am I doing and why do I put paint where I do? No clue. I would be a terrible painting teacher. It feels like magic more than intentional process.

And my friend gifted me this patio set to put outside my studio door. ❤️ Anticipating tomorrow’s morning tea and painting.

Plantago major - one of my personal herbal allies. Plucked this from the gravel.

Kind of a commission. It’s one I’ve been meaning to do for awhile and I need it for the Plantain Salve kit I’m working on at job. So a commission for… me? 😆

Dm if you’d like me to do a commission for you ❤️

We say our house feels like a tree house. Despite local tree frogs assumptions, not actually a tree. Tree frog successfully related to its namesake.

I was seriously terrified of smashing this little one in the door, I didn’t see it until I was coming back inside.

Slime mold is so weird and wonderful.
When scientists put slime mold over a map of Tokyo, they used food to represent urban areas. After a day the mold created a network nearly identical to Tokyo's rail network: all this without any brain.

During a street performance in Porto, an unexpected moment completely stole the audience's attention. A dog surprised everyone by climbing on top of the artist, confidently balancing while striking a true star pose.

Decluttering before and after plus my first batch of beeswax bricks! Swipe to see the after. I didn’t quite capture it, but all the stuff under the counter is gone including 3 of 5 organizing units.

Felt like coffee this morning. And then I felt like un petit déjeuner français too 🥰 I had such fun in Paris this spring and bringing little glimpses of it to my life here in Iowa is bringing me much joy.

Here is a fun non art related thing. Just finished up a 3d charity bow shoot and did pretty okay! Got 4 bullseyes and over 300 for a score! Cheesiest of grins. Hoping this season to get my first “real” deer. Doing my part to help w herd management. #bowhunting

Music instruments made from junk around the house? I can't think of anything that's better for these last no-school days of summer.

So many trees in our backyard were just twisted in half and thrown to the ground. We are grateful the house is sound, and so sad our old oaks and maples and lindens and pines were destroyed. And practice lumberjack skills where safe to. And hiring out the rest to the pros.

And the garden shed is, um, wearing a new hat? We are trying to find someone to come out and remove the limb so it doesn’t fall through the roof.

😭 there is a deck grill under this tree I swear. Geesh. Just finished getting my studio somewhat in order too. First pic is looking out my living room through a shattered window (thank goodness the storm window is holding). The second is looking where the deck is… was.

This is the post basement flooding chaos in my studio. Time to get back in order. I’m posting these before photos in an attempt to force an “after” photo by the end of the day. Decluttering is hard. Water damage forced my hand. Wish me luck.

Like many in Iowa we spent the last week recovering what we could from our too wet basement. Today was the more satisfying work of decluttering what was left (quite a bit thank goodness) and attempting to set it back to right. It’s amazing how much havoc 1” of water can do.
