DEMONSTRATION: Learning from Kronstorf! fighting for a transparent and climate-respectful digitalization When? 11th September 2026, 3pm - 5pm Where? Landhaus, Promenade 4020 Linz, Amid the extreme heat, one question becomes pressing: What will shape our future? Will it be defined by the insatiable appetite for electricity of global private companies? Or will it include a right to shade and to cool, clear water—a right to the health of people and ecosystems? In light of the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure, we must ask these questions now. The massive sealing of fertile soil—as is currently happening in Kronstorf, Upper Austria, where Google is building one of Europe’s largest data centers—is just the beginning. To keep the data streams flowing, the asphalt needs to sizzle. We, on the other hand, are taking to the streets! We’re calling for a gathering in Linz on September 11! We demand an end to the destruction of our livelihoods! We refuse to accept the drying up of our landscapes as a given! True progress comes through listening, democratic participation, and collective skepticism toward the supposedly inevitable. 🔄 Déjà-vu at the Data Protection Authority? Sometimes it feels like hearing the same story over and over again. A Freedom of Information request raised questions with the Data Protection Authority regarding data protection, digital sovereignty, and the potential impact of large international technology companies on digital infrastructure. The response was striking: for key questions, no corresponding information appeared to be available. This is where the déjà-vu begins. When it comes to digital sovereignty, potential access to data outside the European Union, the consequences of international legislation, or control over critical digital infrastructure, one would expect these issues to be thoroughly assessed and documented. ❓Were the risks never examined? ❓Are there no documented assessments? ❓Or do such assessments exist but remain inaccessible to the public? The more often important questions receive no concrete answers, the stronger the impression becomes that essential aspects of our digital future are not being sufficiently scrutinized. Digital sovereignty is not just about technical control – it is also about transparency regarding which risks have been assessed, and which have not. Digital Security in Austria – or just an administrative illusion? We recently asked the Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN) how Austria is securing its critical infrastructure, especially regarding the massive Google data center project in Kronstorf. We asked two specific questions: 1️⃣ Is there a risk assessment concerning our dependence on US technology (US Cloud Act) and the potential for data leakage? 2️⃣ Are there technical strategies in place to prevent a "Kill Switch"—the potential remote shutdown of our digital administration by the operator? The DSN's response? A textbook example of stalling: 🚫 Regarding 1: A simple "No." Our national security agency claims to have no risk assessment? We wonder: is this ignorance or pure negligence? 📂 Regarding 2: Instead of technical emergency plans, we received references to administrative committees and "awareness measures." Let's be clear: committees do not protect us from blackouts or digital sabotage! This is simply not enough! When it comes to our digital sovereignty, we don't need bureaucracy—we need real technical concepts and transparent risk analyses. 👉 What we can do now: Let’s not let this slide.
