NSF has reduced the research budget for all atmospheric, ocean, and earth sciences by ~80%.

80%!

A lot of us will not be conducting new research or training new students for the foreseeable future.

Extremely excited to announce Beauty Pill will play the Big Ears music festival in Knoxville TN this Spring, marking our return to live performance.

Our last show was with Laurie Anderson five years ago.

We could not be more thrilled to be invited.

See you soon.

Whole beaches gone. Houses that were a couple hundred feet from the water, gone. Houses on cliffs, gone. Roads, gone. Extensive flooding. And the worst of El Niño hasn't even hit yet, and the hurricane never came ashore. This is just the beginning.

OpenAI has hired an army of contractors who read real ChatGPT users' chats. I've seen internal docs, the review system, and real user prompts. Sometimes they contain very personal and sensitive information www.404media.co/inside-proje...

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

The thing triangulating Democrats seem unable or unwilling to internalize is that the right wing thinks people who espouse liberal and leftist views are full of shit. Walking those views back, from their perspective, doesn't win their support but rather confirms their priors.

Black Americans have been the moral center of this country from it's inception, and whatever little bit I've picked up about justice, equality, or civil rights is ultimately due to them.

We should be more grateful. Not sure how to say that without being awkward, but it's the truth.
Sure, it can. Write another thread.

Anyone who bikes regularly sees this sort of thing happen at least once, and often multiple times, per ride. It's truly incredible the way drivers casually put their lives and those of everyone around them at risk.

The ubiquity and quality of dutch bike lanes has also revealed to me how god damned stressful cycling in the UK and US is.

And the US doesn't have an excuse - it also has ubiquitous protected paved paths parallel to most roads, but they are given entirely over to pedestrians.

🧵CO₂ removal (CDR) is back in the news, but just because the UNEP report says we need CDR, it doesn't mean we'll have CDR. Many challenges will take decades of research and negotiation to solve. Here are some examples:

Technological: We currently don't have any durable CDR method that scales.

LLMs make patterns based on the data they have and then output those patterns in the forms they’ve been given. That data is vast and those forms are varied but they do not know anything, they do not come to understand anything, they cannot undergo anything, and so they don’t experience anything.

Periodic reminder that an awful lot of folks believe that the solution to far right authoritarianism is "authoritarianism for objectives I like"

Joe Biden didn't have the authority to throw Trump in jail, & the arbitrary use of executive power is exactly the attack on democracy we're fighting now
Why didn't Biden throw the monster in jail? Beware of the legacy democrat.
