I've always been fascinated by the concept of gyres, so I've started to paint them. Or at least how I envision them. 😊

Here's something I painted last week. It's called "When the Sun Comes Up," a play on @wesleystace.bsky.social's song "When the Sun Comes Out" (one of my favorites). This is a larger piece, 10" x 7"--I'm trying to get used to working larger.

An abstract paper which is primarily pink and orange with yellow highlights. The watercolor background is wide stripes of color, including Schmincke Cochineal paint (the real stuff! super fugitive!). There are scales drawn along the bottom in wax pastel, and the yellow dots and orange stripes are tempera paints. Much of the white is filled with graphite stripes and the page is decorated with white dots and stripes of gold ink, with blobs on the lines to indicate beads.

Yesterday was mainly spent on drawing this from a Procreate tutorial. I've had Procreate on my iPad(s) since ~2010, but am only now getting around to learning it. It's a different set of skills, but I think it'd be nice to be able to offer something beyond traditional watercolors in the shop.

An abstract landscape. There are multiple irregular bands of blue--some with white scribbles on them, purple bands with pink and yellow dots, a small band of bright yellow, followed by a blue band with multiple green bands, with scrubby plants scribbled in with lighter green, and finally in the bottom brown bands, there's some horizontal scribbling. Vertical graphite striped connect various bands and gold pen has been applied sparingly throughout the painting.
