But the picture is mixed.

🛢️A handful of NDBs are still fuelling fossil fuel lock-in. 78% of fossil finance found in 2022-24 came from Canada, South Korea, and China.

🌱 Meanwhile, 88% of renewable energy finance came from NDBs in China, Brazil, and India.

Governments can wield them to support development priorities and reduce costly fossil fuel dependency. Our report highlights examples from 🇧🇷 Brazil, 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇨🇷 Costa Rica, and 🇲🇽 Mexico.

NDBs are also uniquely placed to deliver just, country-led energy transitions. They're rooted in national economies and have a stronger track record of creating local jobs and reinvesting domestically than their international peers.

While MDBs typically get the spotlight for their role in funding the energy transition, NDBs are often overlooked. Yet, G20 NDBs already invest more in renewable energy ($36 billion a year) than MDBs and bilateral public finance institutions combined ($29 billion).

"The fossil fuel phaseout roadmap we are fighting for at COP30 needs to address systemic economic barriers to the transition, not prop up debt traps and dead ends that prolong the fossil fuel era.”

@bronwentucker.bsky.social says: "GS countries can't leverage enough private finance for the transition with the pennies of climate finance they're offered. This approach has been pushed for years & the results are in. Energy transitions are driven by public funding & public planning."
