I can't always determine who is and isn't worthy of trust. But I tend to trust people who carry books with them. Because while I might not be able to tell who will lie to me, at least I know that someone well-read is more likely to be lying for a good reason.

Controversial take: Schools should be able to expel students for the rest of the year if they exhibit bad behavior which doesn't improve within an acceptable timeframe. A student making classes unteachable shouldn't be kept in class on the grounds that they have not been violent.

I have long believed that modern microwaves are a perfect example of the problems with capitalism. It costs money to install a system that makes annoying beeps every time you press the buttons. They then charge you more for microwaves that do not have the annoyance to which you have been acclimated.

The MiG fighter developed by the USSR lacked any form of hydraulic power control. The pilots would have to physically exert enough force to counteract the effects of high-speed winds in order to perform maneuvers. As a result the pilots would often do hundreds of pushups a day, to maintain fitness.

Within two years the emir of the White Horde, Edigu, was dethroned, and the Mongolian Empire was greatly reduced in power. The Kievan Rus state which survived the siege would become the nation of Russia.

On this day in 602, Emperor Maurice of Byzantium was murdered at the harbor of Eutropius. He and his five sons were brought there by the usurper, Phocas, who had been recently crowned emperor. Maurice was forced to watch all five of his sons beheaded, before suffering the same fate, ending his line.

On this day in 1940, Romania became a signatory of the Tripartite Pact, aligning them with the Axis Powers. Hungary had done the same only days before. Within six months, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and Greece would all be under Axis domination, giving Hitler control over most of non-Russian Europe.
