Ai bros hate artists because deep down they know they have no goals, no dreams, & nothing that they truly love. It’s a dark void that eats & gnaws at them so they lash out at those that have that spark. All they want is to drag you down with them to prove that it’s all hopeless

Rereading old blog posts, and Grognardia reminded me of this essential truth: "don't design rules with bad players in mind. Any rule, no matter how well written, can and will be abused by players looking to find a way to take advantage of a situation."

I won't pretend it was perfect by any means, but I do think my years of doing nanowrimo did two big things for me in setting up my long-term creative habits, which is that 1) I get In the Zone really easily, and 2) when I am In the Zone, I am both focused and decisive

Today in People Are Good: I went back to my alma mater for a career panel. There was a reception beforehand, where a prof stopped in her tracks and stared at me and went "Doug?"

I recognized her but wouldn't have guessed that she even remembered me. Hadn't spoken to her since graduating. (20+ yrs)

Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job.

Think about that in context of
AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP.

Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down.

"AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago.

We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.
Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

Alll of this. I started my career in construction, working office jobs alongside people who worked trades. Know how many 60-year-old guys I saw working as bricklayers? Doing demo? Zero. How many 50-year-old roofers there are? Zero. One reason unions fight for high wages is because careers are SHORT.
This is why I get pissed off when anyone accuses me of being an elitist when I say young people should go to college if they can. I say that because my dad was a local lineman and contractor who did heavy physical labor for years and has had chronic back pain since his early 30s
I was raised by a nurse with an associates degree and a steel mill electrician. I am not denigrating the value and dignity of blue collar work when I ask how many elite national media staffers are raising future bricklayers themselves.

My source is that I love designing narrative video games. I love making video games with my best friend and my beloved coworkers. However, I also love writing horror novels, and writing in one arena but not the other is not what I Need to Do to feel creatively fulfilled.

and fwiw "fulfilled purpose" doesn't mean getting a crazy publishing deal or like. earning a ton of money from your passions, but it DOES mean executing a vision you have and expressing yourself spiritually

the crazy thing about making time for any creative pursuit is that you literally have to do what you have a gut-deep yearning to do or else you'll see other people doing it, and it WILL make you insane.

🚨 BREAKTHROUGH: Scientists have created a sugar-coated nanoparticle that blocks COVID-19 from infecting cells with 99% effectiveness in lab tests.

This isn't a vaccine. It's a decoy.

And it could change how we fight viruses forever.

That's not genAI, that's computer programming that's been around since the 90s. My dad is a computer scientist who developed the non-linear algorithms for it, using mammograms. GenAI bros want us to think it's all the same so we think positively of their crap, but one is actual science.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

There are actually almost no “machine made” clothes. Sewing garments requires an ability to account for stretching and shifting fabrics. We can’t create robots that can do that reliably. Most of our clothes are made by highly skilled and criminally underpaid factory workers overseas.
What the fuck, Joyce. I don’t even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as “lesser” which is bullshit! All books count!

And before I get people being like “not all men” dude it’s still a lot of yall and if it’s not you be more vocal, stand up and say something unprompted.

We should treat genAI in publishing the way you’d treat a vampire trying to enter your home. You never give it permission to enter. It doesn’t matter if it‘s polite or makes generous offers or it’s *only* going to take the ones *you* don’t care about. It’s here for your blood. Don’t let it in.

True not just in publishing/writing. Look at how this new Meta Muse basically jumps into the user's shit, mixes it around, gets it everywhere. Shares their address. Lies to their contacts. Sells their stuff at a low price. Do not let the vampire in. Hang garlic. Sharpen stakes.
