My last portrait of our founding fathers is Charles Thomson (1729-1824.) Although not a signer, Thomson deserves mention as the Secretary of the Continental Congress who recorded every debate and engrossed the final copy of the Declaration. His elegant handwriting appears on the original document.

George Wythe (1726–1806) was a mentor to leaders of the Revolution. As a signer of the Declaration, he brought wisdom & legal insight to the Continental Congress. He was the 1st professor of law in America, at William & Mary, & an opponent of slavery. His tragic death by poisoning remains a mystery.

Oliver Wolcott (1726–1797) a soldier, judge, and statesman from Connecticut, combined military and political service. As a brigadier general, he fought against the British, and as a delegate, he signed the Declaration. Later, he helped ratify the Constitution and serve as governor of Connecticut.

John Witherspoon (1723–1794) was a minister, educator, and president of Princeton University. A fierce advocate of liberty, he brought moral authority to the Congress. He trained many future leaders and signed the Declaration as a testament to his belief that freedom was both a divine & civic duty.

James Wilson (1742–1798) was a leading legal mind of the Revolution. Signing both the Declaration & the Constitution, he helped shape our legal foundations. He served on the Supreme Court & taught law. His belief that government derived its power from the people became a cornerstone of democracy.

William Williams (1731–1811) a merchant, & soldier from Connecticut joined the Continental Congress shortly before signing of the Declaration. Deeply religious & patriotic, he saw independence as a moral necessity. Later serving in Connecticut’s legislature and helped draft the state’s constitution.

William Whipple (1730–1785) of New Hampshire, brought wisdom & courage to the Continental Congress. A signer of the Declaration, he was a general in his state’s militia, fighting at the Battle of Saratoga. He freed his slave, declaring that he could not fight for liberty while denying it to another.

George Walton (1749–1804) a Georgia patriot was among the youngest signers of the Declaration. A strong advocate for independence, he served as a colonel in the militia. Captured by the British, he was exchanged, and went on to serve as governor, senator, and judge. Walton County GA bears his name.

Matthew Thornton (1714–1803) a physician from New Hampshire signed the Declaration months after it was adopted. Though late, he had long supported the patriot cause as a writer & colonial leader. Later serving as a judge & state legislator, he is remembered for his civic-mindedness & medical skill.

George Taylor (1716–1781) an Irish immigrant rose from ironworker to statesman in Pennsylvania. Appointed to the Continental Congress he signed the Declaration. Suppling munitions to the Continental Army he suffered financial loss. His life embodied the rise of ordinary men to extraordinary roles.

Thomas Stone (1743–1787) a thoughtful lawyer from Maryland who preferred reconciliation but ultimately supported independence when peace proved impossible. After signing the Declaration, he helped draft Maryland’s state constitution and served in Congress. He retired early to care for his ill wife.

Richard Stockton (1730–1781) a New Jersey lawyer signed the Declaration despite personal risk. Captured by the British, he was imprisoned, mistreatedt, & released in poor health, dying before the war’s end. His family suffered heavy losses, but his courage made him a symbol of sacrifice for freedom.

James Smith (1719–1806) an Irish-born lawyer settled in Pennsylvania & became an early advocate of independence. He served in the Continental Congress & signed the Declaration in support of liberty. Smith also led local militia & worked to strengthen state government during and after the Revolution.
