The answer is yes. Already on its own, but more importantly as a prerequisite to get the right therapy. Which people who panic about the rise in diagnoses always seem to forget.

Couple of things to add here. First, it is very unclear what "make" would have entailed. Maybe spitting out what the RNA of a very infectious virus would look like? The genomic sequence of a bacterium? Or more likely, a description of what kind of organism would be a good potential bioweapon?
more speculation than substance here. while it makes sense to take reasonable precautions w/ unknowns, i'm just not convinced LLMs are anything like the major bioweapons catalyst it's being hyped as. (plus you can't ignore that this is good PR for anthropic. "see! we can regulate ourselves" etc.)
Breaking News: Anthropic said it halted potential plots by scientists who used its A.I. models to do research that could have helped develop biological weapons.

I had no idea how much it sucks to make medical decisions for your newborn. Even if it's a super minor thing and good for her in the long term, I hate the idea that we are going to make her deliberately uncomfortable. Blegh.

Seems I have to revisit some old research interests
After 18 years of litigation, the Fourth Circuit just wiped away a $42 million jury verdict against CACI for its role in torture at Abu Ghraib—a verdict the same court had *affirmed* earlier this year.

Why? Because of #SCOTUS's 6-3 June 23 ruling in Cisco, which eviscerated the Alien Tort Statute:

This is the very worst kind of argument. The racist pseudoscience Cofnas is peddling has been refuted so many times. You cannot regurgitate it and pretend it's all in good faith and for open science, you only do this to legitimize racism. There is no debate to be had here.
How about refuting them on theoretical and empirical grounds? That is kind of how science works. It doesn’t work by calling people names, refusing to engage with their claims and attempting to get them fired.

I'm just going to say that racist hacks losing their jobs is a good thing, actually. And I'm happy to sign an open letter declaring that.

Nobody asked for it, but here are some observations being the father of a newborn (10 days old! Yay!), who is also the sartiorialist in chief (aka, I do all the changing) while my wife is recovering. 👇

Given my general clumsiness and the number of times I fell off my bike (the two may or may not be related) I should have been a lot more battered than I am. But a good few years of judo have made sure I still walk around with all limbs straight and attached.
and tbh even if you don't retain the fighting skills over the years - as i've lost from my time in martial arts - having how to take a fall *properly* drilled into my muscle memory has saved me from god knows how many broken bones

New study shows that — contra widely accepted narratives — there is NO EVIDENCE that professors change their students’ politics and make them more liberal through their teaching

Voor de Nederlandssprekenden: lees het fantastische boek Het Lijk Van De Dictator over de fascistische obsessie met de corpus (cc @jobpolak.eurosky.social)
The lib "he's obsessed with men's bodies, so he must be gay as hell" is homophobic, of course, and utterly cringe, but also just misses the point.

Hegseth may or may not be gay. I'm not here to say. But his obsession with the male physique is because he's just a fascist.
Every time I see a thread full of liberal homophobia like this one, I lose some of my faith that we can make a better world.

Als je goed kijkt zie je dat er ook echt geen hond is. Dit is maar een heel klein blokje van het Jaarbeursplein. Deze lui vertegenwoordigen niemand, ze schreeuwen alleen voor zichzelf.

Nice reminder that Ceuta is not "in" Europe, it is on the North African coast. Its history and connections to mainland Spain are complicated, but Von der Liar glosses over all of that to score a cheap point against migrants.
The Commission President expresses NO solidarity with Spain or the thousands of people affected in Ceuta.

Nor does she call on other EU Member States to support Spain in managing what is a European border.

No rebuke to Italy and Finland threatening to ‘suspend’ Spain from Schengen. That’s illegal
