Returning to the South-East for the next phase of Dover Castle visual interpretations. Glad I took the time to label and organise every part of my 3D model and kept detailed notes. It's a complex project to navigate, with thousands of elements. Long project ahead, so see you on the other side ;)

Happy Good Friday. Exactly 4 years ago, I was finishing this reconstruction model of the nave of Bury St Edmunds Abbey (c1500s) with my former EH colleagues, Steven Brindle and Carlos Lemos. Here's my #Blender3D model before I added textures, polychromy, and fictive ashlar decorations. See Alt text.

This shows how the nave might have looked in the 1500s and shortly before the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Until the 15th century, the abbey church remained in its Romanesque (11th- and 12th-century) form. However, it was remodelled in response to two major disasters. First, in 1430–31, the original west tower collapsed. Then, in 1465, the nave roof caught fire, and the central tower either collapsed or was demolished. Brougham Castle (Aerial view reconstruction from the North East) c.1388. Brougham Castle stands beside the River Eamont near Penrith on the site of the Roman fort of Brocavum. The castle was founded in the early 13th century by Robert de Vieuxpont, who built the great stone keep c.1200–1210 and enclosed it with a curtain wall to control a key route into northern England. Through marriage, it passed to the Clifford family. Roger de Clifford strengthened the defences in the late 13th century, adding the east range and improving the gatehouse. His son, Robert de Clifford, a prominent supporter of Edward I, expanded the residential buildings and strengthened the fortifications during the Anglo-Scottish wars, thereby consolidating Brougham as a northern stronghold. This digital reconstruction shows how the castle may have looked in 1388 following the additions and alterations made by Roger Clifford, 5th Baron of Westmoreland. Artist: Bob Marshall (2017) © Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 A digital reconstruction of the chambered cairn monument at Easter Delfour near Alvie, part of a well-defined group of stone-built monuments found around the Moray Firth and Central Highlands, the so-called 'Clava cairns'. Often thought of as burial cairns reserved for elite tribe members, their purpose remains somewhat mysterious. The cairns combine several similar elements: a circular cairn with a platform on the outside, bounded by a ring of monoliths or standing stones which date from the Bronze Age (2500BC to 800BC). This reconstruction image combines survey data with some influence drawn from the Balnuaran of Clava near Culloden, which is one of the best-preserved Bronze Age cairns in Scotland. The structure was entirely open in the centre, and the surface evidence suggests there was no passage like the better-known Balnuaran cairns. Delfour had an unbroken rubble wall supported by kerbs of upright stones inside and out. There's no evidence these were used for burials or cremations (except perhaps later use). Two years ago, I embarked on an ambitious 3D reconstruction model of Dover Castle, recreating how it might have looked at the time of the Great Siege in 1216. Working with a team of architectural and military historians, the digital model and 3D renders took over five months to develop. #Blender3D
Computer 3D model reconstruction of Dover Castle as it might have looked in 1216 on the eve of the Great Siege of 1216, when the Castle defended an attack by an Anglo-French rebellion against an unpopular King John of England. Working closely with a team of architectural and military historians, the digital model absorbed over 800 hours of work over five months. Laser survey and GIS data, hundreds of measured architectural drawings from Historic England archives, old engravings and paintings, and the findings of three detailed archaeological reports were analysed to create the digital model. Photographic textures, 3D renders, and manual digital painting helped bring the Castle's history to life through richly detailed images. The completed images were created for the exhibition, Dover Castle at Siege, which English Heritage opened in July 2024. The site was identified as a hillfort in 2010-11 (Historic Environment Record: MHG55341). The reconstruction model was created in Blender 3D using a combination of high-resolution digital terrain data obtained from Ordnance Survey, which I used to create my backdrop of the Cairngorm Mountains. Although the fort has never been excavated, the line of its rampart walls can broadly be determined by a stony bank that encloses an area of roughly 85m x 30m, bearing immediate similarities in size and shape to Craig Phadrig hillfort near Inverness. However, unlike Craig Phadrig, there is no evidence that Torr Alvie was vitrified. It is difficult to know how thick the ramparts were, whether there were timber palisades, and how many entrances the fort had, so imagination plays a large part in this visualisation. A speculative digital reconstruction of the early sixteenth-century chancel screen of St Mary's parish church in Youghal, Ireland. Using survey measurements, I developed a computer model to help me work out a possible design for the screen and its loft. Its form is guided by the information written in historical documents and from a single piece of decorated timber, which may have been part of this original screen, found underneath the church floor during recent archaeological investigations. I have combined influences from some surviving medieval screens found in churches in several English counties. The depiction of the Last Judgement painted above the chancel arch is imaginary, and also influenced by similar mural paintings found in several medieval English churches. The Last Judgement, sometimes also referred to as a ‘Doom’, was a common feature of medieval churches. It was an instrument for highlighting the contrasts between the rewards of heaven and the agony of hell, intended to guide Christians away from sin and misbehaviour. Colour in historical reconstruction: The 60-30-10 rule and its key role in cinematic colour grading is my best guess as to why these productions elect to dial back the vibrant medieval polychromy. But it does look rather like the producers haven't bothered to consult experts for some guidance here.
