A motorcyclist died Sunday after striking the rear of an SUV that had stopped to turn left on U.S. Highway 14 in the town of Berry. The SUV’s driver was not injured, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office said.

County Executive Melissa Agard’s proposed budget would cut 34 vacant jobs and seek $5 million in health insurance savings while using more than $23 million in reserves. The plan also calls for a roughly 2% property tax increase, even as the county’s tax rate would fall slightly.

Highland Avenue will close at the railroad tracks near Campus Drive starting at 5 a.m. Friday as crews replace deteriorating crossing infrastructure. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will need to use detours until the street is expected to reopen Wednesday morning.
