Coco is a very fearful Poodle mix that Mary is helping learn to be more comfortable and confident.
We have also been helping her build a healthy curiosity about the world around her.
She has built up enough trust with Mary to lie down near her, which is big progress for Coco!

Costumes, decorations, and all the changes around the neighborhood can be challenging for some dogs.
If your dog doesn’t enjoy dressing up, skip the costume and try a festive collar, bandana, or bow tie instead.
Never force them to approach something they’re afraid of.

Training with food won’t automatically make your dog gain weight, and it won’t spoil them.
Food is communication. It helps your dog understand what worked and makes them more likely to repeat that behavior in the future.

A wagging tail doesn’t always mean a happy or friendly dog!
Dogs use their tails as part of their body language, and wagging can happen when they’re excited, unsure, fearful, uncomfortable, or in a state of overarousal.
Remember, a wagging tail doesn’t always mean “come say hi!”

When we think about allergies in our dogs, we usually think of itching, licking, red paws, or ear infections. But allergies can affect behavior, too.
If you think allergies may be affecting your dog, be sure to check in with your veterinarian.

Not every dog wants to say hi, and that’s okay.
Whether your dog is shy, reactive, in training, recovering from an illness, or simply isn't interested in meeting new people, you have every right to say "no" when someone asks to pet them.
