AI is an unregulated emergency on every level--academia, art, national security, privacy, the environment, faith in journalism, and on and on and on--and deriding those who are desperately trying to pull the handbrake as we go over the cliff as alarmists will not age well (if we get to age at all).

Great (spoiler filled) review.
We decided to hold my Digger review until after the first wave of critical responses had gone up, so I would be free to "spoil" the early twist that basically sets up the film's premise. Rarely has such an unpleasant movie to sit through been such a blast to write about: slate.com/culture/2026...
Tom Cruise’s Big New Movie Isn’t What It Appears. It’s Something Much Worse.
Digger has a huge twist. It’s a disaster of almost apocalyptic proportions.

So I get on the L train at 14th at 2am after a very nice party in Manhattan. Train is clean, bright, plenty of people but still plenty of space. There's a young woman stretched out fast asleep on one of the rows of seats. I think hey, good for her, and sit down nearby.

Since the oligarchs won’t take ads for the film, let’s all post this:

While we wait to see if Digger gets Tom Cruise an Oscar, here's an essay I wrote about his three Academy Award nominations, his hard turn away from that early quest, his strengths and weaknesses, and the limits of "intensity." A decade later, I think it still applies. grantland.com/hollywood-pr...

Ya know, some of us care about nature, eat healthfully, believe in the fact-based (and spiritual!) benefits of exercise, avoid fast food and are skeptical of Big Pharma while *also* believing in science! And we can do all this without embracing dangerous, destructive anti-reality bullshit.
A lot of people in public health believe that MAHA is “nothing more than a subversive anti-vaccine, anti-science syndicate,” but the movement is an opportunity that the public-health sector “cannot afford to squander,” Craig Spencer argues:
Public Health Needs MAHA
The field must swallow its pride and admit where the insurgent movement is right.

This week someone targeted my family for harm with a false report. We’re physically OK, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t harmed. I am beyond furious.

Whatever your politics, this is awful, wrong, and can never become normal.
A Terrible Thing Happened to My Family
Even in today's climate, there should be one fundamental principle everyone respects: whatever you think about someone in politics, you leave their kids alone.

While his mountain of horrible personal conduct could fill multiple books, one fact in particular stands out:

A year ago, Musk’s actions directly led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. He did it knowingly. And, worse — gleefully.

The message this sends is that if you plan violent acts on behalf of President Trump, he will do everything in his power to make sure you see no consequences.

While Trump's assertion that "a whole civilization will die tonight" represents a discrete threat of genocide against Iran, the fact that it comes from a U.S. president, while Congress does nothing, actually represents a broader civilizational collapse — whether he follows through or not.

Donald Trump is an unhinged warmonger and war criminal using violence for personal gain and profit, while innocent people pay the price.

Congress must reconvene to pass the War Powers Resolution. The 25th Amendment must also be invoked. Congress has to do our damn job. War powers and Impeachment.

Constitutional lawyer here. I don't think it would violate the Constitution for the VP/Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, but the intended constitutional remedy for this behavior is impeachment & removal. The fact that that remedy is politically impossible is a scandal and a crisis.
If I were in Trump's Cabinet, I would spend Easter calling constitutional lawyers about the 25th Amendment.

This is completely, utterly unhinged. He's already killed thousands. He's going to kill thousands more.
