The most important thing you can do at this point is to learn more about Rice's whales, talk about them, and get involved with the great orgs I tagged above (and lots of others). Attention and awareness are key.

In our research, we argued that actions related to oil and gas development in the Gulf are the most likely to bring Rice's whales into the news and public attention/discussion. That doesn't guarantee desired conservation outcomes because news moves on fast and the window of opportunity is limited.

National orgs like @biologicaldiversity.org, @nrdc.org, and @defenders.org and local @healthygulf.bsky.social have been leaders in Rice's whale education, conservation, and management. But they need you to talk about Rice's whales as they try to navigate whatever it is the Committee decides.

Scientists had enough evidence to recognize the Rice's whale as a new species of whale in 2021. That discovery failed to grab headlines, which means you and the people in your life probably have no idea these whales exist, let alone that this rare meeting is such a danger to them.

I do agree on the importance of the place-based descriptor in normal times!
A current wrench in the gears is that the US can't even decide if that body of water is called the Gulf of Mexico or the Gulf of America. That alone is politicized/polarized & (for now) the whales would be no better off.

We did see patriotic framing 🇺🇸🐋 in quotes by scientists and conservationists, mostly in earlier stories (2021/2022). Attention cycles rely on drama, so the framing wouldn't likely do much on that front. Definitely other reasons to explore it further, though.
