when I post these days it’s often prefaced by some mental or physical complaint. But I am grateful for every day. The sun is out the rhythm of the waves is wonderful. This is the first of the year’s beach paintings. Does it have enough emotion? What?

I’ve been finding it hard to paint. Just insisted to myself I would. Some of the emotion of the times. How would you describe her? #markkaufmanwatercolors

I’ve been whiling away the days Jean has been in Denver. I am over that event, but her flight is now delayed be several hours. I think this lady must be waiting for something too. #markkaufmanwatercolors.

Three steps in woman in gold dress. It isn’t quite gold yet. A ways to go.

What do you call or name this angel.

Simple composition with strong contrast. I went that direction to shake out the painting doldrums.

Another black and white. I allows a focus on form when done with transparent watercolor.

This was painted with one number 8 round brush leading to a looser style. My entertainment at the beach in between walks and such.

Sometimes I paint images to shift a mood and sometimes to reflect one. Here’s the latest in several stages. I’ll post them together.

Started another black and white. Very small face in order to fit the much larger building on the paper. No tolerance for slightest deviation.

Early in the morning, but I finished this one. There is something about black and white that’s satisfying. Of course, the white is just the paper. The only paint is the shades of black.

There is something evocative about black and white. #markkaufmanwatercolors #womaninthewindow

Wanted something so extravagant as to be unlike in reality. It’s monochromatic basically but the color is a blend of Prussian blue, vandyke brown, red, cobalt and ivory black. A few white and black touches were added. #Markkaufmanwatercolors #portrait

It was said the last one was too defiant to be trapped. In this one is she protected by the basket or imprisoned?
March 4, 2026 at 11:51 PM
I wanted to paint an image of a face somewhat bizarrely trapped. I chose a basket to trap her. More or less reflects my current mood. I have several other sketches, but may or may not paint them. You’ve read what I think. What does this conjure for you?

It hopefully is clear she is —//////////. Her companion doesn’t look all that bad.
January 20, 2026 at 12:26 AM
She may not be yet recognizable without her companion. Perhaps later this evening he (or she since I can’t in this pose and cropped as it is discern her companions gender) will emerge. #watercolors #markkaufman
