I’m reminded of basic social needs from a social psych class: affiliation, achievement, and autonomy. (We like to be liked, we like to be right, we like to be free.)

Are there parallels here? Underdogs achieve; hidden royals find affiliation; misfits succeed via autonomy?

Maybe not punishment (reaction to the last election) so much as a projection about the next election: they’re calculating that those ridings are unwinnable at the moment, so not worth the effort?
