Brush piles are a great way to make habitat for urban insects and amphibians. But they are too messy for most gardeners. Luckily, we can organize them like so to still provide habitat and be more aesthetically pleasing. #gardening #science #rewilding

underground spaces and they are easy to create. Simply excavate areas about the size of a one gallon pot (in colder regions go deeper, below frostline) and fill with different soils. Make shelters above and below ground. Etcetera. New book posted in the comments.

Did you really plant a prairie/meadow? or did you install plants that grow in those habitats? Most likely, it is the latter if soils aren't diversified and subterranean habitats were ignored.

Wildlife need plants AND resources.

Your garden needs this! Adding pockets of organic material help feed fungi and soil biota. It also provides necessary refugia for insects including crickets, fireflies, beetles, and moths. #gardening #nature #insects
