I’ve been very inspired by like really heavily tattooed men from the 50s but like I haven’t really mapped out all the tattoos. But also, I wanted him to look like he’s straight out of the 80s because retro video game aesthetic. A like the mullet. I admit, I’m leaning towards a rather cartoonish proportion for his design. I wanted to take inspiration from like the in-model proportions of the characters from the game so…big feet next time and big hands. That’s kinda how I like to approach the BARAFICATION stuff. I want to be inspired by the style the characters were made and not just drawing them in my style and hope people get who I’m drawing based on clothes or whatever. I want people to be able to tell who I’m drawing even if they were naked and I think taking into account proportions and the art style of the character helps. Anyway some story elements will be discussed in the second pic So for Luigi to tie in to the story, I feel like he should be able to unconsciously astral project to other worlds in his dreams but doesn’t know it. Like, he gets very vivid life-like dreams and he sketches them down and make detailed observations about things. Then, when he got older, he’d have them tattooed on etc. One of his focal dreams is like the many heroic adventures of a ‘Dragon King’ and I’d like to imagine that his drawings would be the in-canon bowser. his family just chalked it up to him being creative and contrarian…maybe a free spirit who would end up being like a prodigal son, because he doesn’t really wanna stay in the plumbing business BUT he doesn’t really have the guts to do anything else. Mario goes missing and Luigi gets waking visions of what his brother has been doing and it gets stronger and stronger as he gets closer to a hidden wormhole and he arrives just in time to stop bowser from killing Mario for stealing an unhatched Bowser Jr. Luigi’s presence causes the egg to hatch and they all lived happily ever after. I kinda like the idea of Bowser speaking in very formal English at first. Maybe he becomes less formal as time goes by but at first meeting, I want it to be like DCAU Starfire because he doesn’t have command over the language yet. Luigi is smitten by the 8 foot tall gorgonopsid daddy stud of course. Bowser may be too dense to realize it at first but it’s not a relationship that progressed quickly, I would think. Maybe we’ll go the beauty and the beast route. I love a BATB story. Anyway, just some behind the scenes stuff on how I draw things. I like laying down thick swathes of colors, smudging them around until I get a basic shape and just go over it with a tight black brush on the same layer. Hahahaha it’s supposed to be messy but it works. Also just to note…I think the only way clothing would work on bowser is if it’s like a halter or apron? Or like two pieces tied with rope as a fastener around his shell? Right?

New Year’s Card: Two Female Mice Playing Shuttlecock and Battledore (1912) This charming color lithograph from 1912, part of the Leonard A. Lauder Collection, serves as a celebratory New Year’s card, likely commemorating the Year of the Rat (or Mouse) in the Japanese zodiac. The transition from the Meiji to the Taishō era brought a flourish of creative postcard designs that blended traditional auspicious symbols with playful, modern graphic sensibilities. The image depicts two anthropomorphic mice dressed in elegant, flowing kimonos, engaged in the traditional New Year's game of Hanetsuki (battledore and shuttlecock).
