This piece by Rebecca Solnit is one of the most deeply moving explorations of what tech takes from us, how it transforms us, how it demands we become more like it and less human, that I've read www.theguardian.com/news/ng-inte...

The most striking thing about this forthcoming book by @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social is the preponderance of hope.
“Ideas have power”, she reminds us, with clear-eyed analysis and encouragement to connect.

“Liberation is contagious” - even in this time of monsters.

Brilliant & vital.

This week the eastern coastline of Sicily has been devastated by high winds & waves up to 10m high but if you follow Italian national media & blinked you'll have missed it.
Salvini said with the Messina Strait bridge help would arrive faster.
Spoiler: the bridge would be closed due to high winds.

The devastation caused this week by cyclone Harry in Sicily, Sardinia & Calabria has mainly gone unnoticed in the media. The Eastern coast destroyed, estimated damages around two billion eur. A tragedy for the locals who lost homes, jobs, boats (fishermen), roads completely collapsed into the sea 😞
Secolare.

Well, if you're looking for a distraction from politics, come on over to the weird and wonderful world of medical history! If you ever wondered what would happen if you needed a leg amputated in 1832, or if you had a toothache in 1765 - look no further. Bloodlettings! Bodysnatchers! I got it all.

This is further proof that AI companies are free-riding on the work of authors, which makes effective legal regulation that gives creators proper transparency and control all the more urgent. We're working with our partners in the creative sector to urgently make this case to the Government.

We are disappointed but not surprised that Meta has used millions of pirated books to develop its AI systems.

As a matter of urgency, Meta needs to compensate the rightsholders of all the works it has been exploiting.

But what can authors do? Read here:
