Going forward, the US National Science Foundation research budget for all atmospheric, ocean, and Earth sciences is $110 million per year.

Trump's illegal war with Iran cost the Department of Defense (i.e., the American taxpayers) $38 billion in the first 5 months, or $220 million per day.
Estimating the Cost of Combat Operations Against Iran
CBO assesses the Department of Defense's costs for the current armed conflict against Iran, as well as the conflict's economic and budgetary effects.

*deep sigh*
So, look, the problem here is several-fold, but a bunch of it has to do with the fact that the “trans rights movement” is internally and externally incoherent. Probably because “gender” is incoherent.

This is not a problem the gays, bi’s, and lesbians have!
They apparently took all of the wrong lessons from the wildly successful gay rights movement, choosing to be as alienating as possible. I won't be surprised if it ends up like abortion and 20 years from now public opinion is effectively frozen on the issue somewhere around 50/50.

I'm struck that it is Iran targeting USN ships enforcing the blockade that brings this response.

It's the only legal thing Iran is doing!*

It's treated as this unique breach, but it's not - the tanker strikes are worse, legally.

*Striking US military bases would also comply with the LOAC.

i think conceding the idea that militancy per se is "fascist" is conceding the fascist worldview entirely, because the fascist worldview is that freedom and equality and friendship are luxuries which can only be paid for by "strong men doing strong man things"

Minor gripe of the day: I don't like the word 'popularizer' as a term for a scholar who communicates with the public. It sometimes isn't badly meant, but I've heard it said with venom (often with the word 'mere') too many times and it downplays the work that goes into actually doing it.

The mother of a USNA midshipman was detained by ICE AT HER GREEN CARD INTERVIEW and is now being held in a concentration camp and I find it insane that people don’t understand how THAT is a bigger national security threat than any undocumented immigrant.

I want to expand on this in a short thread.

Fascism sucks.

It is also not going away: it is an effectively permanent part of modern representative politics because it is an effectively permanent part of human nature.

We have to be prepared to push back against it, basically forever.
That said, I think at this point, we can conclude that fascism is a latent political force in basically every country, to a greater or lesser degree and so you need to be thinking, "what if my country goes fascist? what if a neighboring country does?" and plan for how to avoid or deal with that.

Hey folks, this hasn’t gotten much attention, but remember those proposed OMB rule changes we all commented on recently? There’s a new attempt to sneak them just for NSF. We have three days to comment. Please don’t sleep on this!
Three more days to comment on NSF's attempt to smuggle in OMB's already-rejected policies of terminating any grant without cause, gutting civil rights obligations and restricting international collaborations. Submit your comment today! Then call your representatives. 🧪
My comment on NSF-2026-OTR-0001, NSF's obsequious gutting of their own procedures, replacing them with OMB's proposed rules undermining federal grantmaking with their ideological agenda.

Why would I read a summary when I can read the news article?

Like, either I’m actually interested in the topic or I’m not.
lots of replies asking about this so here are two solid use cases for AI:

1. LLMs are good at summarizing widely available information. Ask one to summarize a news story you aren't caught up on.

2. Girlfriend. Ask the AI to be your girlfriend.

Now you're well-informed and you have a girlfriend.
i am reasonably confident that i could figure out a way any person on Bluesky could use a $20 OpenAI or Claude subscription to improve some aspect of their life in fifteen minutes of talking through it, if they're willing to try in good faith

Brandon and the Butler County Dems showed that when we stand up and fight back, we win.

I was proud to have campaigned with you, Brandon — congrats!

Let’s do it again in November!

FWIW, I think the question of "Did Woke 1 go to far?" it depends on where you ask!

On college campuses? Sometimes.

In making cops responsible for bad behavior? Obviously not!

In holding sex pests and criminals to account? Clearly incomplete, look at the damn White House.

One very large caveat about hopes for a MAGA decline. It mostly seems to be tied to dissatisfaction with Trump, not conservatives moderating their views. If anything, the Groyper wing is growing. The movement might fracture when Trump goes, but it won't disappear.

Let's say we had better magazine depth, better anti-drone and drone-use doctrine, better equipment, more mine-sweepers - would we have done better? Maybe.

Would we have achieved literally any of our strategic objectives? No! Probably not!

We'd be more or less exactly where we are!

In short, there are valuable lessons we can learn about drones & interceptors & magazine depth & mine-sweepers, etc.

But the key lesson is: no amount of tactical excellence can salvage strategic incompetence.

Who lost the Iran War?

The American voter did, that damn fool. And he ought to feel it.

Indeed. Anyone who claims that Israel is the United States' 'closest ally' is basically instantly discrediting themselves.

Our actual closest allies, at least before 2025, were very obviously the Five Eyes (FVEY) countries - the UK, Australia, New Zealand and, of course, obviously, Canada.
I don't know why I bother to keep saying this, but Israel is literally not even a treaty ally of the United States.
The mayor accused Israel’s leader of genocide and the maiming of children. And he wants to make an enemy of America’s closest ally, writes Douglas Murray.
