25 years ago today, I was living in Davis, California, just west of Sacramento. I overslept that morning, and both towers were already down by the time I woke up. I took an hour to find my American flag in the garage. I raised it up over my patio on Cowell Boulevard.

On this date in 2014, I became the president of Cedar Rapids West Rotary. It was a unique and fulfilling year, and I am grateful for the many friends that I have met through Rotary.

36 years ago today, I sat in Seerley Hall at the University of Northern Iowa, waiting for my math class to begin. When the professor walked in, she wrote "November 9, 1989" on the board. She then said, "Don't ever forget this day, and how it will change the world." #BerlinWall

Fifty years ago today, Arthur Ashe defeated Jimmy Connors to become the first African-American man to win Wimbledon.
This is the autographed photo of Ashe that is on the wall of my home office. I recommend his book "Days of Grace." He was a remarkable individual.
