The job is far from done. But today we pause for a second in appreciation of all humanitarians out there, especially mine action workers, for their hard work in making the land we walk on safer.

Wars may end, but landmines stay hidden in the ground for years, waiting for an innocent civilian—most likely a child—to kill or maim. This is why the world must uphold the Mine Ban Treaty. #MineFreeWorld

Today, together with Handicap International, we launched The Nobel Piece. And yes, we broke our Nobel Peace Prize to do it.

Five countries have abandoned the Mine Ban Treaty so far. Landmines are being used in active conflicts. A norm that has protected millions for nearly 30 years is under threat.

On 20 February, #Poland withdrawal from the Mine Ban Treaty took legal effect.
@minemonitor.bsky.social showed that for every 10 people killed/ maimed by landmines, 9 were civilians nearly half children.
If landmines are deployed again, this is the reality to expect.

According to the Landmine Monitor Report 2025, 9 in 10 recorded landmine casualties are civilians. Almost half are children.

Let these figures sink in. States using, producing, or considering the deployment of landmines should take note of this documented reality.

Why are we still using weapons in 2026 that can’t tell the difference between a soldier and a child?

Landmines are a legacy of danger and they belong in the past.
