Yes, the whole mess was built upon the media-manufactured illusion of Trump as a successful businessman rather than a sociopath, born into a fortune, whose orthodox business ventures had been spectacular failures (until he ventured into crime and overt fraud, which proved somewhat more successful.)
I like this @aselrod.bsky.social depiction of Trump as a creature of media pathologies. I don't think it's fully understood how deeply a wholly invented version of him penetrated into the culture and how that allowed him to shrug off his disastrous 1st term.
