Things would have been completely different in 2000 if Al Gore would have been president after winning the most votes and then in 2016 with Hillary. What different alternate reality we would be in compared to what we are in now.

They lacked imagination. Just a simple "what if the congressional majority is unwilling to stop the President from walking all over the law and the Supreme court just shrugs".
