need a musicologist who specializes in musics associated with fascism/authoritarian regimes/dictators to write a longform essay on this
Very possibly the most incoherent playlist in music history. Utterly berserk.

I decided this summer I want to watch as many 60’s beach party movies as I can get my hands on. here’s my take on the two I watched this weekend

I don’t know if anyone actually reads my posts on here but just in case I’m going to announce that I’m singing Sieglinde in a 30 min excerpt from Die Walküre alongside Tenor Carl Tanner on Sunday, July 19, 4:00 pm. Free admission.

I still miss Jezebel and much of the wider Gawker ecosystem
as we grieve the slop-ification of Google, I want to know everyone's favorite fun niche sites from Back When The Internet Was Good. what did you visit every day on your coffee break at work? we were a big Homestar Runner household, and I also loved Cake Wrecks and Animals Talking In All Caps

If a figure skater makes a mistake on one element but then nails the next element, the deducted points from the first element should be applied to the next one because it is so hard to just keep going after a mistake when there is that much pressure on you

after a prolonged period without practicing or performing, yesterday I had a 90 minute coaching on act 1 of die walküre and I’m listening back to the recording this morning and

when this storm was forecast my mom had the idea to take me (11 years old) to “get snowed-in” at an old log-cabin our family was renting. We ended up with no power or heat for several days—using just a wood fire for heating and preparing food
❄️ The Blizzard of 1996 — began 30 years ago today ❄️

An unforgettable storm. 16-32" of snow buried the DC area as one of the most prolific snowstorms on record blasted from North Carolina to Massachusetts.

Earlier this year I was at an antique store with my sister, thumbing though a bunch of old magazines— this 1950s issue of Man’s Life caught our eye and we laughed and laughed as we paged through it.

Yesterday she gave it to me for christmas.

for once in my life, the local rare bird group chat lit up on a morning where I had nothing else to do and that’s the story of how I saw a long-tailed duck this morning

A single follow-up question from a journalist interviewing Made-over Marjorie Taylor Greene might expose the fact that when Marjorie Taylor Greene says "Americans," she means a very specific color of American, speaking a very specific language, practicing a very specific religion.

there's a moment in PARADISE LOST where Satan arrives in Eden and realizes Hell isn't a place; it's a thing he carries within him and it'll follow him wherever he goes. and i think about that when i see these awful rich men whose monstrous wealth has enriched them not at all

seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

basically every 2024 truism is dead. Trump did not build a lasting multiracial coalition or turn young men into committed Republicans. You don’t need to cave on trans rights to win. The pundits have nothing left to tell you.

I often listen to old union anthems sung by Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and others, and something that always stuck me is how many of these songs have verses that declare that “race hatred” will not break their solidarity. They knew it was just another union busting tactic.
You in fact can't talk about the history of the labor movement without talking about multi-ethnic coalitions. The International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union was initially composed of Jewish and Italian immigrants, but later grew to Black, Puerto Rican, Chinese, and Filipino workers.

also? it is the end of October right now??
On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer

At the root of enduring conservative rage despite their capture of all three branches of government and most state houses is the subconscious realization that nothing will ever make them happy. They are miserable people who will be miserable no matter what happens.
